Why An Early Orthodontic Evaluation Matters for Kids

We just finished visiting thousands of kids in schools across the northwest metro during National Children’s Dental Health Month. And one of the most common questions we received from teachers, aides, and other adults during our visits was, “What age should kids first see an orthodontist?” It makes sense, because as a parent, you want to ensure your child’s smile is healthy and developing properly. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) answers the question with a recommendation that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this stage, a child’s mouth is still growing, and early detection of potential issues can make a significant difference in their long-term oral health. Here’s why this early visit is so important:

1. Detecting Problems Early

By age 7, a child typically has a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. This allows an orthodontist to identify potential concerns such as crowding, spacing issues, jaw misalignment, or bite problems (overbite, underbite, or crossbite). Addressing these issues early can prevent more serious problems from developing.

2. Guiding Jaw Growth

Some orthodontic problems stem from improper jaw development rather than just crooked teeth. At a young age, the jaw is still growing and can be guided into a more favorable position with early intervention. This can reduce the need for extensive orthodontic treatment later in life, such as jaw surgery or extractions.

3. Preventing More Serious Issues

Early orthodontic treatment, sometimes called interceptive treatment, can help prevent conditions that may require more invasive solutions in the future. For example, correcting a crossbite early can prevent uneven wear on teeth and jaw pain later in life. Addressing crowding early can also create space for permanent teeth, reducing the likelihood of extractions.

4. Improving Speech and Chewing

Orthodontic issues can sometimes affect a child’s ability to chew food properly or speak clearly. By addressing these concerns early, orthodontic treatment can enhance a child’s overall development, improving both function and confidence.

5. Boosting Self-Esteem

A healthy smile plays a key role in a child’s confidence. If a child is self-conscious about their teeth, early orthodontic care can help set them up for a lifetime of healthy, confident smiles.

6. Clear Airways and Better Sleep

We wrote a previous blog post about the importance of proper airway function. In summary, when jaws and teeth have space and fit together properly, it means airways are clear. This improves breathing, sleep, and overall health.
